Knowing where your food comes from also means knowing what happens after it leaves the farm.
For Nutrafarms sausages, Hoffman’s Meats is part of that journey. This family-run Ontario business processes Nutrafarms sausages using traditional recipes, hands-on methods, and decades of experience.
We visited Hoffman’s to meet Mike Hoffman, see how the sausages are made, and learn more about the family behind the process.
A Family Tradition Since 1975
The Hoffman family’s story began in Germany, where Mike’s father learned the butcher trade after the war. He continued developing his craft before coming to Canada in 1958.
The family later established its Ontario operation in 1975. Mike grew up in the business, and today the next generation is involved too.
That family experience continues to shape how Hoffman’s prepares food today.

Behind Nutrafarms Sausages
One of the things that stood out during our visit was how straightforward traditional Farmers Sausage can be.
Mike explained that the foundation is simply meat, salt, and pepper. Different varieties can then build on that base with ingredients such as garlic, honey, cayenne, or chili pepper.
The recipes remain closely connected to the Hoffman family's roots. When asked how similar today's sausage is to what the family made decades ago, Mike said:
“It’s pretty well the same.”
There is still a hands-on element to the process too. Hoffman’s uses natural casings, and Mike continues to complete parts of the sausage-making process by hand.
For Mike, it all starts with the meat. As he explained during our visit, the quality of the sausage depends on the quality of the ingredients that go into it.

Relationships With Ontario Farmers
Hoffman’s also values knowing the farmers behind its meat.
Mike spoke about his family's relationship with Arnold's farm, which goes back to 1988. He explained that the farmer grows feed and cares for the animals, giving Hoffman’s familiarity with where its pork comes from.
That local focus is intentional.
“We’re Ontario based. We wanna stay Ontario.”
Working with longstanding farmers and suppliers helps Hoffman’s maintain the consistency its customers have come to expect.
Shared Standards With Nutrafarms
For Hoffman’s, being a family business means taking pride in what leaves the facility.
That is also what makes the relationship with Nutrafarms a natural fit.
When Mike was asked about working with Nutrafarms, he said:
“They have high quality standards. As a business owner, we have high quality standards.”
He summed up the philosophy behind the business in one simple line:
“Quality and taste is the best marketing.”
